The engineers who built your favorite app almost certainly tested it on a worse version of the internet than you use. Not by accident. On purpose. The goal is not to punish testers. The goal is to see what real users actually experience, because the people building software almost never share the same conditions as the people using it.

Tech companies apply similar logic when managing live infrastructure, sometimes throttling their fastest servers deliberately to prevent worse outcomes downstream.

The Gap Between the Lab and the Real World

The average software engineer in a major tech hub works on a gigabit fiber connection, often wired directly into a router, on hardware that cost several thousand dollars. The average user of that engineer’s product is on a mid-range smartphone, connected to spotty LTE, possibly in a rural area or a country where 4G infrastructure is inconsistent. According to data from Akamai and similar network analysis firms, a significant share of global web traffic still originates from connections slower than 10 Mbps. In parts of Southeast Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America, median mobile speeds fall well below that threshold.

When a product team runs usability tests on their office network, they are essentially testing a product that most of their users will never encounter. Bugs that appear only under load, design choices that become confusing when a page takes four seconds to render instead of half a second, and features that work flawlessly on fast connections but collapse under pressure, all of these go undetected. And yet, many teams do not use these tools consistently. The pressure to ship, the comfort of fast office networks, and the basic human tendency to test what you can see rather than what your users experience all push teams toward optimism. Products get released that work beautifully in San Francisco and struggle in São Paulo.

Why This Matters Beyond Speed

Deliberate slowdown during testing is not only about catching performance bugs. It surfaces design problems that speed conceals. A loading spinner that appears for half a second on a fast connection is barely noticeable. On a slow connection, it becomes a question mark: is the app broken, should I tap again, did my payment go through? The instinct in product development is to optimize for best-case scenarios. Faster hardware, faster pipelines, faster review cycles. But the teams that build products with the longest staying power tend to do the opposite during the testing phase. They make things artificially worse in order to see the truth.

This is a pattern that shows up across high-performing organizations in ways that can look strange from the outside. Senior developers write code specifically for failures that have not happened yet, building resilience into systems before there is any evidence it will be needed.
